Best Skateboard Trucks

Choosing the best skateboard is no easy task. It requires a lot of reading and analyzing the features of different brands and models. The easiest things that riders often pay attention to are the deck and the wheels. Oftentimes, the skateboard trucks are neglected and overlooked. Read what to look for in some of the best skateboard trucks below.

Although they may not be an obvious component that needs to be considered when choosing skateboards, the trucks actually play a major role in the overall performance of every skateboard.

Every skateboard is comprised of two trucks, with each housing two wheels. The basic property to look for in a skateboard truck is durability. It should be long-lasting and capable of withstanding the expected wear and tear brought about by excessive practice.

They may seem like a simple component for a skateboard but they actually has a few different parts, each of which holds an important role in the construction of the board.

Skateboard Truck Components

This plate is mounted directly to the skate deck, serving as the part that evenly distributes your weight and ensures a secure hold for the entire wheelbase.

It the thick bolt of the skateboard truck that basically holds the entire board together. It serves as the fastener of the axle and the bushings to the baseplate connector.

Kingpins are disposable but you have to make sure to choose durable ones to avoid breaking the board while riding.

The hanger is the truck part that makes direct contact with the railings. It is where the wheels are attached. Good hangers are generally lighter and weigh about 10-13 ounces.

Bushings affect the maneuverability of the board. They provide the cushioning while the trucks twists and turns. They also set the firmness of the trucks and affects how it wobbles, especially when riding at high speed.

Skateboard Trucks Sizing Guide

The width of your truck axle should closely match the width of your deck. Truck size can be measured by the width of the hanger or the width of the axle.

“What size skateboard trucks do I need for my skateboard?”
6″-7.25″ Axle – 6.5″ to 7.25″ deck width
7.5″ Axle – 7.25 to 7.5″ deck width
7.75″ Axle – 7.5” to 8″ deck width
8.0″ Axle – 8” to 8.5″ deck width
8.5″ Axle – 8.5” to 9″ deck width
9.0″ Axle – 9” to 10” deck width
10.0″ Axle – 10” and above deck width

“What about truck profile height?”

Truck profile is the distance between the bottom of the skate deck and the hanger.  In general, a mid-sized truck works well for most skateboarders, but high or low skateboard trucks may be preferred for different styles of skaters. Here’s the breakdown:

Low : Provides extra stability for flip tricks, designed for small wheels (50-53mm).
Mid : Good all-around profile for street or park (53-56mm).
High : Great for cruising and carving, designed for large wheels (56mm+).

A good set of trucks and wheels make up an ideal wheelbase, especially for pro riders. For beginning skaters, these factors don’t matter as much, but it’s always good to know about this stuff.
